Benchmarking of the revised "RTRS Principles and Criteria" against the 'RTFO Sustainability Meta-Standard'
Produced by: Ecofys
Based on this benchmark of the draft RTRS principles and criteria, RTRS would meet the environmental 'qualifying standard' level. RTRS would also meet the full social Meta-Standard, becoming the first benchmarked standard to do so.
The RTFO Meta-Standard is at the heart of current biofuel sustainability reporting in the UK. It includes criteria relating to carbon stocks, biodiversity, air soil and water protection, workers' rights and land rights. Feedstock standards (such as RTRS) are compared to the Meta-Standard, and those that meet most criteria are judged to 'qualify', while any standard meeting all of the RTFO criteria is judged to meet the full Meta-Standard. Fuels at either the qualifying or Meta-Standard level may be reported by UK fuel companies to the RFA as meeting a sustainability standard. Companies are expected to supply a certain percentage of their fuel each year (50% this year) meeting one of these standards.
