Luiza Bruscato talks sustainability in soy production on Canal Rural’s “A Protagonista”

Sustainability in soy production is more than just a trend – it’s a market requirement. The Global Executive Director of RTRS explains how responsible practices can create new business opportunities and enhance producers’ competitiveness on the global stage.

Luiza Bruscato, Global Executive Director of the Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS), recently shared her insights on sustainability in soy production during an interview on “A Protagonista”, a program broadcasted on Canal Rural in Brazil. The conversation covered several key aspects of sustainable agricultural practices and their increasing importance in the global market.

“The challenge is to try to create something that can translate what sustainability means for soy production worldwide. Each country has very different realities, and standardizing best practices is essential to ensuring a responsible and globally recognized production,” remarked Bruscato.

Bruscato also explained: “Responsible practices can create new business opportunities and enhance producers’ competitiveness on the global stage.”According to Bruscato, this shift is driving the need for farmers to adopt sustainable practices, which in turn opens up opportunities in global markets that demand certified, responsibly sourced products.

Another key topic discussed was the growing role of certifications in ensuring sustainable production. Bruscato urged Brazilian producers to embrace certifications as a way to gain global recognition and added value. “The opportunity for Brazilian agriculture is to embrace certifications. Even though producers follow local legislation, obtaining a certification guarantees quality and compliance with global standards, giving them an added value for their soy,” she emphasized.

In terms of RTRS’s impact, Bruscato shared some significant numbers. “Today, RTRS certifies more than 8 million tons of soy globally, with 6 million tons coming from Brazil. This represents over 320 farms in Brazil, making it the largest certified market in terms of area and volume. RTRS certification is also present in 6 countries, with more than 400 certified sites across the supply chain,” she explained.

Lastly, Bruscato shared a personal reflection on her career. “Resilience represents my journey. From challenges to leadership, I believe any woman can reach their goals with perseverance and dedication. My message is: keep believing in your work and stay true to your path,” she concluded, offering a powerful message of persistence and empowerment to women in agriculture.
